What’s in World Champion James Conrad’s Bag?

James Conrad is your 2021 PDGA World Champion. It was a long and sometimes arduous road but he ascended to the top of our sport. Conrad had been sponsored by Innova for 5 years before making the switch to MVP in 2021. Many people in the disc golf world questioned whether he could maintain his consistency with an entirely new lineup of discs. Much of this speculation was due to MVP being a lesser-known company and the historical difficulties of other top pros in their first year after switching sponsors. Conrad silenced his critics in a big way.

For many people in the disc golf world MVP discs remain a relatively unknown phenomenon. That will change after reading this post. Below is a breakdown of discs in Conrad’s bag. Each disc is listed with various information and has a link to its product page on the Rogue Discs website. The information includes the plastic type, flight numbers, disc description, and an explanation from Conrad himself. Much of the information for this post was gathered from Conrad’s “In The Bag” video on Youtube.

Putters

Ion (Electron Soft) 2.5 / 3 / 0 / 1.5 – The Ion is a beaded putt and approach disc. It can hold long straight lines finishing with a late fade. The Ion is versatile in all conditions.

“These things feel great in the hands…Just been getting really clean releases. Been really happy with my putting with these Ions.”

Envy (Electron Firm / Cosmic Electron) 3 / 3 / 0 / 2 – The Envy is a slightly overstable putt and approach disc that features a modern feel and a slightly lower profile. It has reliable high-speed stability with a minimal fade, making it useful for putts and approach shots.

“Feels great in the hands…I’ve been loving the Envy so much for throwing that it doesn’t leave a lot of need for midranges.”

This is the disc that he threw into the basket from 247 feet on hole 18 of the 2021 PDGA World Championship for the “Holy Shot.”

Entropy (Electron Firm x1) 4 / 3 / 0 / 3 – Entropy is an overstable putt and approach disc developed for control and touch shots. It has a reserved glide and a dependable finishing fade.

Mid-Range

Reactor (Cosmic Electron x1/Glow x1) 5 / 5 / -0.5 / 0.5 – The Reactor is a workhorse midrange, designed to follow any line and fill any slot in the bag. It will handle big hyzers as well as big turnovers. Tell it where to go, and it will listen. The Reactor has a “modern” midrange rim and is the first in MVP’s Next Generation of midrange discs.

Fairway Drivers

Relay (Cosmic Electron x2) 6 / 5 / -2 / 1 – The Relay is a slightly understable fairway driver with a comfortable grip. Beginners will experience a controlled straight flight without much power behind it, while more advanced players will see a healthy turn. It’s the easiest MVP driver to throw as a beginner.

“The Relay has been really useful. Especially when we have gotten out to a wooded course.”

Crave (Electron Firm x1) 6.5 / 5 / -1 / 1 – The Crave is a moderate speed, straight-stable fairway driver. It provides controllable straight flights with a comfortable feel.

Volt (Cosmic Neutron x2/Neutron x2) 8 / 5 / -0.5 / 2 – The Volt is a slightly overstable fairway driver geared for long, accurate placement shots. It can stay on a long straight line, finishing with a strong fade. When on tight fairways, Volt will meet the accuracy you need.

“It can handle a lot of power…Very useful utility driver.”

Distance Driver

Tesla (Fission x1/Neutron x1) 9 / 5 / -1 / 2 – The Tesla is a slightly overstable distance driver that balances a subtle turn and reliable fade. The additional glide will help it gain extra distance for long-range pinpoint accuracy.

“This thing is a bomber!”

Wrath (Cosmic Electron x1) 9 / 4.5 / -0.5 / 2 – The Wrath is a stable-overstable distance driver that mimics a broken-in Tesla. Players with more arm speed will be able to turn on command and hit distances, while players with less arm speed will experience fading lines and find use in headwinds.

“I’m liking it as a really controllable driver.”

Insanity (Proton x1/Neutron x3) 9 / 5 / -2 / 1.5 – The Insanity is a stable-understable distance driver that acts as a worn-in MVP Inertia. It has more high-speed turn and less fade. For low arm speeds, you’ll find it to fly straight, while power throwers will experience precise flips and turnovers.

“These fly pretty understable. I’ve actually been using these as a roller disc or on a shot that I need a really late flip.”

Fireball (Neutron x1) 9 / 3.5 / 0 / 3.5 – The Fireball is an overstable distance driver that exhibits a long forward push before fading toward the end of its flight path. It works well in headwinds.

“I was able to hit it hard, hit it flat, and trust it to cover some distance and fade nice and softly to the ground.”

Motion (Neutron x1) 9 / 3.5 / 0 / 4 – The Motion is a very overstable distance driver developed to resist winds and turnovers. It will travel long and straight, finishing with a reliable fade. It’s a versatile disc meant for players of all skill levels.

Photon (Fission x3/Cosmic Neutron x1) 11 / 5 / -1 / 2.5 – The Photon is a slightly overstable distance driver giving every thrower a reliable fade and power throwers more turn. While it’s headwind resistant, an average thrower can use it to their advantage to emulate extended distances of high-powered throwers.

“Something that I can get great distance out of while maintaining some good control.”

Panic (Neutron x1) 13 / 4 / -0.5 / 3 – The Panic is thoroughly overstable, with plenty of beef to handle headwinds and torqued-up sidearms. Its overstability holds the Panic on any kind of hyzer line and allows steep anhyzer flex shots. For high-power throwers, the Panic will be a useful utility driver, while newer and average throwers will get an extremely overstable flight.

“I can hit it with hyzer and trust that it will never roll over on me. Definitely useful to have a really overstable fast disc in the bag.”

Bringing It Together

2021 was Conrad’s first season with MVP and he cycled his way through many discs to see what worked for his game. While it took him some time to figure out his new bag, it paid off in a big way. James Conrad stood on the biggest stage of disc golf as the champion of the world. To get there, he threw arguably the greatest shot in disc golf history with the Envy. In the past, MVP discs were easy to come by. That all changed with one incredible shot from James Conrad. Check out this list of discs in Conrad’s bag and add some great discs to your own bag.
